It expands the universe, it adds more thrills, plays the narrative with the same level of artistic and cinematic noir flare, and keeps the bullets flying. While I would argue that the original is better, this follow-up does pretty much everything right. Don't expect huge developments from MP1though.think slightly better, slightly easier, more of the same. That 'just one more go' feeling is the mark of a great game and 'The Fall of Max Payne' is certainly worth your money and time. Max Payne two is a great game that will keep you playing just one more section until you finish it. Overall all the complaints about music, length and enemy spawn and the loss of pace at moments are all very minor detractions. Some of the levels involve back-tracking through the whole level several times, which again seems a cheap way of making the game longer. It doesn't happen too often but seems a lazy way to make the game difficult and it's irritating.
There are some other annoyances there is an occasional tendency for villains to come out behind you from doors you just walked through and rooms you just cleared. If you played MP1 you know what you're getting with these cut scenes and it is a certain style that helps give the entire game a solid singular feel. It's overbearing and whilst you can switch it off in the 'noir cut scenes' that move the plot along it does detract a little. The music however is a real Payne in the arse. You won't feel disappointed when you finish, but it could have been longer. It is however, shorter than the first game I finished it in under 9 hours and I am slow at games.
This really doesn't detract here though because it's such a great game to play. The graphics are better than MP1 but still poor by modern standards, they haven't aged well. Different qualities would have added something to the game. For example, you get to play as another character, but they operate exactly as Max does so it's just another skin. Some of the other improvements don't work as well as they might have done either. This isn't necessarily a bad thing to have to adjust to different scenarios, but part of what made MP1 so great was the sheer fury and frenetic pace of the action. Often they slow it down a little, forcing you to alter your play style. Well the improvements are good but they don't really add to the gameplay a great deal. They have really tried to improve on Max Payne one here. You have to take on enemies from near and far, protect npc allies, jump from buildings, beat times on explosions to escape, run through fire and exploding rooms. There is a stack of variety in the gameplay throughout the game. Missions are large and exciting, so much so that you are drawn into Max's life and really root for him. The gameplay is slightly improved, for example the mildly irritating dream sequences from Max Payne 1 are replaced with an altogether better effort that add to the game and the growing sense of Max losing the plot.
